What can you do if you're really hard on yourself all of the time, if things aren't going exactly the way you planned?
Hi, this is Mike Pettigrew, bestselling author and serial entrepreneur since 1987 and I help ordinary people to achieve extraordinary goals, but possibly not in the way you might think. Now, a lot of people come to me and they tell me that they're trying to achieve their goals, but they get really hard on themselves if things don't go though the way they want. They start blaming themselves and getting angry with themselves. And you know what? That slows up the process dramatically. But there are things you can do to stop being hard on yourself. Okay? So what can you do if you're really hard on yourself all of the time, if things aren't going exactly the way you planned?
Well, look, the fact is that nothing goes the way it's planned in life. And if you look at the lives of the world's most successful people, you find that they encountered incredible challenges, incredible setbacks, but they had resilience. They just didn't give up at the first hurdle, which unfortunately most people do. And I completely get this because back in my late teens and early twenties I used to shudder almost when I heard the word goal achievement or goal setting because I didn't believe I could achieve my goals. I was constantly berating myself. I thought I was useless at everything. But you know, you gain confidence and appreciation for yourself when you set small goals and achieve them. Okay? And then you go on to set bigger goals and achieve those. And your ability to transform your dreams into reality grows according to how you grow inside.
But you know what? You are not growing inside if you're blaming yourself and berating yourself all the time. It's almost like every human being has two minds, a positive mind and a negative mind. And we're all too familiar with the negative thoughts that come into our mind that try and stop us. That try and sabotage our dreams. But you know what? You've got to take charge of your life. You've got to take charge of that negative inner voice. So what's important is how positive or negative you are over time, over time because what dominates perpetuates. So I would suggest to you, if you're giving yourself a hard time and you're experiencing setbacks and you're blaming yourself, I would suggest that you actually start doing some appreciation exercises - appreciation exercise. Do things that show appreciation to yourself. For example, many, many years ago, back in the early 1990s I was on a financial roller coaster.
I'd started a business and I was making no money and I found that blaming myself - I had very low self worth, very low self esteem and my finances reflected that. So I started doing things that would uh, to appreciate myself more. And as I grew my own self value, my own self worth, my finances reflected that. And I did really well in business. So everything starts small, everything starts with how you are inside - and how you are inside is reflected in your external environment. What you experience in life. So one great way of developing more appreciation, is starting - by using gratitude practices. And if you're not familiar with gratitude practices, you might do a search on Google or in YouTube for "crazy gratitude experiment". And you'll come across one of my videos there that'll teach you a very simple method on how to bring out more gratitude in your life.
And when you have more appreciation, life turns magical - opportunities start falling into your lap. You'll be able to achieve your goals far more quickly. But as long as you're berating yourself and blaming yourself, you slow up everything and all you can experience as a life of dissatisfaction. And the more you blame yourself, the more you create a vicious circle for more blame and self-deprecation. So I hope this has helped you.
